Welcome to our Museum

Welcome to the website of The Buxton / Friendship Museum Archives and Culture Center, located at Lot 35 Edmond Forde Street (Lower Level), Buxton Village, East Coast, Demerara Guyana. The purpose of our website is to extend the reach and provide you with information and pictures as it relates to our Museum and Archives.

On August 4th, 2018, we had a grand opening celebration and we are proud to say that to date, the museum continues to expand and attract visitors. This was impacted only by the COVID-19 pandemic in the last year.

Museums throughout history have their purpose in society in every country, based on their Mission and Vision of what they were established to portray. They provide a social outlet for people in communities that they serve while at the same time preserve history. They also contribute to the economies of communities and, if properly structured, the country in general.

Located in a historical village on the East Coast of Demerara, the establishment of the museum has even more significance since it recognizes and highlights the contributions of our villagers in various fields. The museum also includes various artifacts and documents which over time would have been lost, unless carefully preserved.

With the Emancipation of slavery in 1838, the Village Movement began to spread. The pioneers, both male and female, were still able to save enough money to buy Plantation Orange Nassau, later renamed Buxton. Friendship Village was later purchased and the combined area became Buxton /Friendship. The purchase of Buxton / Friendship and other villages set the stage for the formation of the Cooperative movement in Guyana. These villages, located about twelve miles from the capital Georgetown, together with the neighboring villages, have set a significant historical trail of village life and a model for social and economic development in the country. The contributions of the people of Buxton / Friendship, Annandale, Bladen hall, Vigilance, Strathspey and Lusignan are worth preserving, not only for the communities involved but for the nation as a whole, since its residents have served the country in all areas as Ministers of Government, Political leaders, Businesspersons, Teachers, Accountants, Bankers, Architects, Builders, Engineers, Farmers, Insurance Agents, Real Estate Agents, Bakers, Writers, Poets, Nurses, Lecturers and other professions.

In keeping with our “Mission and Vision” which is shown under its own heading, the Young Visionaries which was formed in 2015, has been mandated to help preserve the legacy of our ancestors and support the work of the BFMACC. They are continuously being trained through their attendance at Summer Programs at Walter Roth and the National Museum. These youths are the heirs of the legacy and the future life of the Museum & Archives. It is their duty and that of the other youths in the village to protect and ensure its continuity.

As you peruse our website we trust that you would find it very informative and will be motivated to visit and also invite others to do so. This no doubt would help us to KEEP AND PRESERVE HISTORY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Your generous support and contribution of cash and in-kind would be appreciated as it will ensure our sustainability as we grow.

THANK YOU
